CHILD
TRAUMA
CONFERENCE 2024
17-18 September 2024 J&J Belmont Square Conference Centre Healing Generations
Join us for the Child Trauma Conference, where we will be exploring creative ideas
and inspirations around child protection and mental health.
Presented by Jelly Beanz,
in proud collaboration with MOSAIC
Healing generations focuses on:
The intersection of Child Trauma and GBV within domestic violence: Examining the interconnectedness of child trauma and GBV, exploring how experiences in one domain impact the other, and identifying comprehensive strategies for intervention and support.
The impact of trauma on current and future generations and finding creative and effective measures to interrupt this cycle of abuse. Four key sub-themes have been identified to be addressed, examining the challenges and opportunities for intervention and prevention strategies:
Online Behaviours: As children are increasingly living their lives online, the influence of digital spaces on children will be unpacked, the role of technology in both exacerbating and mitigating harm will be explored, and strategies for promoting healthy online behaviours will be discussed.
Harmful Sexual Behaviours: Understanding the dynamics of harmful sexual behaviours between children, including their roots in trauma, and developing effective interventions to address and prevent such behaviours.
The latest research in neurobiology challengs some of the principles of Western-centric therapeutic practices. Healing practices within the African context will be explored with a view to making services to children and families effective and relevant on their lived experiences.
Information Summary
42 % of South African children have experienced abuse (sexual, physical, emotional, or neglect)
82% have face victimisation (direct criminal acts of exposure to familial/community violence)
Sexual Abuse Amongst Adolescents
Alarmingly, about one-third
of adolescents, both girls and boys,
have suffered sexual abuse,
with community studies in areas
like Soweto and Khayelitsha
showing exposure and trauma
rates as high as 99%
and 80%, respectively.
34.4% of adolescents reported being
physically harmed by adult caregivers.
Impact on Development:
Exposure to violence and adversity significantly impacts children's development, Shapes their future relationships, societal roles and families.
Societal Factors:
Gender norms and patriarchal values in South African society contribute significantly to these statistics.
